What my grandson taught me: Seven Healthy Kid Snacks

I have to admit, I haven’t always been as health conscious as I am now. When I worked outside the home, it was too easy to just order takeout, give out processed snacks like chips, crackers, and even a Twinkie or two.

I still fall backwards on occasion and let my youngest pick out doughnuts or some sugary snack at the store. It’s a hard habit to break when you are super busy and they catch you off guard.

We had our oldest grandchild over for a week a couple of weeks ago, which we love to do because we get to spoil him and send him home. That’s our job, isn’t it?  I assume that all kids rather have cookies and candy when given the opportunity. Like, when mom is not around. Not that I would just feed him junk, but it’s fun to let them have a little sugar-just a little.

So, when I asked him if he wanted a freshly baked chocolate chip cookie, he politely declined. Shocked, I asked him if he was sure that he didn’t want one of my delicious and gooey cookies and he once again declined.

I then asked him what did he want to have for a snack and he answered, “I would like an orange, please.”

Whaaat?

“Kudos to your mom, kid,” I replied and then chuckled to myself and handed him an orange.

I guess sometimes it takes our kids (and grandkids) to keep us grownups on the right path to healthy eating.
