Oh hi! You know I’m all about plumping up our skin to look good.
Healthy fats are a big part of this!
You don’t have to use abrasive chemicals on your skin to get it to look good (YUCK!). In fact, all that aggressive stripping will only create a worse environment for your skin. As I always preach, healthy comes from the inside out and just natural products on the outside. As tempting as it is to scrub down after a long day, our skin is delicate and needs to be nourished instead.
Don’t expect to magically have plump, happy skin without addressing what you eat. Fat is essential for producing hormones, absorbing fat soluble vitamins, hydrating skin from the inside out and effectively balancing blood sugar.
There are five fats that are designed by wonderful mother nature to that will rock your world (& skin). Here’s the skinny on my favorite fats to wear and eat for better skin.
AVOCADO
I’m sure you’ve heard about how avocados should be your skin’s best friend. Avocados contain monounsaturated fat that helps hydrate and shield the skin. The bestest (sorry) natural moisturizer, avocados may help with anti-aging due to xanthophyll, an antioxidant and carotenoid with DNA damage protection. Avocados are also an awesome source of vitamin E, which helps with collagen production and benefits skin elasticity.
EGG YOLK
Just one egg yolk contains 13 essential nutrients. A perfect superfood for your skin! The yolk is rich in B vitamins, vitamin A, E and selenium which are vital cell functions. Not only will egg yolks give you a fabulous source of protein, they are also a natural source of biotin. Hair, skin and nails LOVE biotin.
GHEE OR GRASS-FED BUTTER
I probably use ghee every day. I love to cook with it. Full of omega-3 fatty acids and medium-chain triglycerides, ghee or grass-fed butter is processed by the liver and used for energy that can keep you satiated through the next meal. If you don’t think that’s cool, this healthy fat is also high in vitamins A and D (a first line of defense against the sun’s harmful UV rays). Not sure how to get butter in your diet? Try adding it to your coffee (plus a tablespoon of MCT oil) to stabilize blood sugar and burn fat as energy through lunch. Or, just cook your eggs with ghee and try adding an avocado.
COCONUT OIL
Coconut goes inside and outside on me. I take a spoonful of unrefined coconut oil, or add it to my morning smoothie. Use coconut oil on your skin for a great natural moustirizer. It’s antibacterial and antifungal. When you eat it, it bypasses the liver and is used for energy instead of being converted into triglycerides.
FATTY FISH FOR OMEGA 3
Omega-3 is just oh so good for you! Recent studies suggest adequate levels of this anti-inflammatory fatty acid will not only keep your skin clear but will also increase cell hydration from the inside out. I get it through supplements and wild salmon. Not a fish lover? One serving of walnuts has 2776 mg of omega-3 essential fatty acids and is a great source both of protein and of copper, a mineral that boosts collagen production.
What do you think, guys? How do you get your healthy fats in?
