It was a happy quinky dink that I was longing for some apple pie and it’s Pi Day! Do you celebrate this never-ending number (3.14159 . . .) holiday that is also Einstein’s birthday?
I was curious about what exactly was so special about this day and why people celebrate it. So I looked it up. I got some info from piday.org (yes, there is such a site) and got this info:
Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th (3/14) around the world. Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159.
Pi has been calculated to over one trillion digits beyond its decimal point. As an irrational and transcendental number, it will continue infinitely without repetition or pattern. While only a handful of digits are needed for typical calculations, Pi’s infinite nature makes it a fun challenge to memorize, and to computationally calculate more and more digits.
This year is a special one- math enthusiasts are calling today “Rounded Pi Day.” When rounding pi to the ten-thousandth (that’s four numbers past the decimal point), it comes out to 3.1416, matching today’s date — March 14, 2016.
That’s pretty cool! Ok, I only go as far as eating pie-of course in a healthier form. Like an apple pie smoothie. This smoothie creation came upon me when I woke up just craving a piece of apple pie. I’m not sure why apple pie came to mind instead of my usual chocolate craving, but it did, and who am I to question wanting apple pie? Don’t worry, it tastes amazing and you won’t feel guilty eating it either. If anything, you can pat yourself on the back for getting some greens in (yes, there’s spinach in it) while taking care of that apple pie craving!
- 2 cups fresh spinach
- 1 cup almond milk
- 2 apples, core removed
- 1/4 avocado mashed
- 4 medjool dates, pitted
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon nutmeg
- Blend leafy greens and liquid base together first. Add remaining ingredients and blend again. top with cinnamon.
What’s your favorite pie?
xoxo Tess
