If you are a long time reader of my blog, you know that this blog went through different changes over the years. I first started out writing about fashion and travel. Then, I changed over to creating recipes; mainly, desserts. But, then I started becoming interested in creating a more healthy life for my family, so I started researching about making my own cleaning products, eating better, and alternative cures for my joint pain.
I was so excited about what I learned, I started posting more about healthy living and knew that was what I wanted this blog to finally be about.
Along the way, I stumbled upon being a health coach. I’m not sure how I came across it. You know how it goes; you read one blog post, then click on a link from there, and then so on, and so on. I found myself becoming very interested in becoming a “health coach”.
What is a Health Coach?
Health Coaches are mentors and guides who work with and empower clients to achieve their wellness goals through exploring all facets of health in addition to eating, helping people to become healthier and happier.
Over the last few years, the use of the title “Health Coach” has proliferated, being used both by people with and without proper training. Although most ailments are a result of poor diet and lifestyle habits, the majority of doctors are not trained in diet and lifestyle modification. In the existing insurance payment structure, doctors are not compensated to work with patients in those areas.)
Thus, Health Coaches are an essential component of the medical system, as lifestyle modification is their area of expertise.
Before I knew it, I was on the Institute for Integrative Nutrition website learning more about health coaching as a career.
What is The Institute for Integrative Nutrition?
The Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN) is a holistic nutrition program (it’s actually the world’s largest nutrition school), founded in 1992 by Joshua Rosenthal, author of “Integrative Nutrition: Feed Your Hunger for Health and Happiness,” which outlines how health is not a goal with an end but instead a journey.
Joshua’s passion for starting his school came while running several natural food restaurants, Joshua noticed that although he was feeding individuals healthy food, he wasn’t changing their lives. He saw the opening for a holistic approach and became a Health Coach to influence others. While this was rewarding, he wanted to expand his reach by more than just a few people at a time, thus Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN).
It started as a small classroom of students and has grown to have over 50,000 grads worldwide. It’s a mixture of nutrition/wellness/lifestyle classes, but it also includes business classes on how to start a business as a Health Coach (love that!).
This really intrigued me!
How long does it take?
The course takes 1 year to be considered a Certified Integrative Nutrition Health Coach. You can also get credits towards continuing education.
Is the class taught online?
Yes – the course is all digital (which works for me-how about you? ). There are videos you listen/watch and access to additional information in their “library”.
Try a sample class for free by clicking here.
What will I learn about dieting/weight loss?
You’ll learn about all different diet theories, and learn the pros and cons to all sorts of diets. While on this journey, I guarantee that you will experiment with different ways to eat/what to eat. You learn so much!
Can you do this while working?
Most definitely! Many students have full time jobs, families, etc. You can work on it at your own pace.
How much money can you make as a Health Coach? What career path can you take with this knowledge?
Depending which route that you take with your education. Most graduates become full-time health coaches with clients. The average health coach makes $100+ per hour for one on one coaching. Others start websites, write books, create healthy products, teach workshops-the possibilities are endless!
IIN is a great foundation for you to start on your journey to a healthy life and career and to help those around you to join the ripple effect!
