Remember my Sweet Avocado Dip I posted awhile back? I told you how I used to loathe avocados, and swore I would never like them. Then, I gave them a chance and now they are my bestest food friend.
Yes, you can have a food for a best friend.
My one requirement is that it must be made into a sweet dish. So, it might be kindof a love-hate relationship. I’m trying to love my avocados plain, or maybe with some spices, but I’m just not there yet. Maybe I’ll surprise myself and find a perfect recipe that will have me loving my food friend no matter what.
For now, I’m going to eat it mixed with chocolate. I like calling it chocolate avocado mousse. Or, is it avocado chocolate mousse? Which sounds better? Hmm, maybe just leaving out the “avocado” and just call it sinfully-good-for-you-chocolate-mousse.
That’s what I should of told the hubby and the kids. They are still not wanting to be friends with my little green guy in any form. I made this for them but made the mistake of not putting enough chocolate in the first batch-and giving away that there was avocados in it. Up went the noses, and now they won’t go near anything chocolate until they can sniff it first.
Note to self: Don’t tell children their dessert is good for them.
Serious time: We already know all the good things about avocados. Putting chocolate with avocados can only make things better. Chocolate is full of antioxidants-you need to get the good stuff though. I can stand up to 70% cacao. Any stronger and I feel like I’m eating dirt. I love this brand of chocolate -I’m really picky about what’s in my chocolate bar.
(spoiler alert: I’m giving that chocolate away next week!)
I have to tell you, this does not stay in my fridge very long for two reasons:
1. I love it so much.
2. I fear that it will begin to turn dark green (that freaks me out) and I won’t know because the chocolate covers the color (non guilty reason to eat the whole container myself).
If you love avocados and chocolate, you won’t have to worry about it staying around long enough to turn either. But, just in case you feel a bit guilty about eating it all in one day, just be sure to put it in an air tight container.
You can decorate this beautiful little heaven of a treat with cacao nibs, coconut whipped cream (awesome recipe here), or just eat this baby plain like I do!
Just some words of advice:
DON’T LICK THE FOOD PROCESSOR BLADE!!!
I hate wasting food that gets stuck in food processors; especially the blades. So, I tried licking it off. Boy, did that go in a wrong direction! I think I still have a scar on my tongue.
- 2 ripe avocados
- 1/3 cup light coconut milk
- 2 tablespoons unsweetened dark cocoa powder
- 3 tablespoons honey
- 1 ounces of dark chocolate (70% or higher), melted
- 1 teaspoons vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
- Remove avocados from the skin (and pit) and place in a food processor. Blend until combined and creamy. Add in all remaining ingredients, blending until pureed, scraping down the sides when needed to combine. Taste and season/sweetened additionally if desired. Blend for a good 1-2 minutes until completely creamy, then serve with desired toppings.
