I’m always looking for ways to look younger and fight those pesky wrinkles. Sure, there are expensive creams out there, but I believe that you should “treat” your skin from the inside out for real results. Plant-based foods added to our diet offer nutrients that fight free radical damage, hydrate, and keep you looking younger!
There are many foods that can slow aging, and keep you feeling your best. Legumes, mushrooms, nuts, spinach, and bananas for example. There are so many ways you can add these foods, from smoothies to healthy side dishes.
How awesome are each of these 5 age-defying foods?
Legumes
Beans are rich in proteins and anthocyanin and isoflavones-a superb mixture of anti aging agents. Try soybeans and chickpeas for highest levels. Make sure to cook or sprout these first to reduce anti nutritional factors in beans.
Mushrooms
Though you will find that some skin companies are putting mushrooms in their cream, you can also eat mushrooms for their health benefits. Mushrooms contain antioxidants as well as compounds that have anti-inflammatory properties, which help with many skin problems.
Nuts
Nuts are a great source of good fat, which is good for your skin. Almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts, and pistachios contain healthy omega-3s that will help your skin stay smooth. Walnuts contain the most omega-3s, so next time you are hungry for a snack, reach for a handful of walnuts instead of wrinkle causing greasy chips.
Spinach
Popeye knew what he was talking about! Spinach is packed with lutein, which keeps your eyes healthy and young-looking. Spinach is also a good source of vitamins B, C, and E, calcium, potassium, magnesium, andomega-3s. You don’t need to eat a salad every day to get your spinach in, add it to a delicious green smoothie instead.
Bananas
Keep your skin looking young with the high levels of Vitamin C and B-6, manganese and antioxidant properties in bananas. Another great base for a morning smoothie.
My favorite way to combat aging is with smoothies! Here is my favorite skin-glowing smoothie recipe I drink almost daily:
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup coconut water
- 2 frozen peeled bananas
- 1 cup chopped frozen pineapple
- 1 cup chopped frozen mango
- 2 cups spinach
- 1/2 avocado, sliced
Directions:
- Using a strong blender, add all of the ingredients to the blender, starting with spinach and coconut water. Blend on high for at least 3 minutes until smooth. Add more water if it’s too thick.
